How can I tell If I'm eligible?

You're eligible for free prescriptions if you fall under these groups

  • Under 16
  • 16-18 in full-time education
  • 60 and over
  • Income-based benefits (Award): Income Support, Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (use your award notice as proof that you’re entitled) (your partner and any dependent young people under 20 included)
  • Contribution-based benefits (Jobseeker’s Allowance, contribution-based Employment and Support Allowance), not automatically entitled however could apply through NHS Low Income Scheme
  • Pension Credits or Pension Credit with Saving Credit (you or your partner)
  • Not everyone on Universal Credit is entitled to free NHS prescriptions, have to do an assessment
  • If you are pregnant or had a baby in the last 12 months you’re only entitled to free NHS prescriptions if you have a valid maternity exemption certificate
  • Valid medical exemption certificate (because of your medical condition)
  • A permanent fistula (caecostomy, colostomy, laryngostomy or ileostomy) which needs continuous surgical dressing or an appliance
  • A form of hypoadrenalism (for example, Addison’s Disease) for which specific substitution therapy is essential.
  • Diabetes insipidus or other forms of hypopituitarism
  • Diabetes mellitus - except if it is treated only by diet
  • Hypoparathyroidism
  • Myasthenia gravis (a condition causing muscle weakness)
  • Myxoedema (hypothyroidism requiring thyroid hormone replacement)
  • Epilepsy requiring continuous anticonvulsive therapy
  • A continuing physical disability that means you cannot go out without help from another person.
  • Cancer if you are currently undergoing treatment for cancer, the effects of cancer, or the effects of cancer treatment.
If you have one of these conditions you must apply for the medical exemption
certificate to be able to qualify for a free prescription from the NHS.
  • valid HC2 certificate (certificates are issued to people who qualify for full help with health costs through the NHS Low Income Scheme
  • Low income scheme could help you pay for NHS prescription charges, NHS dental treatment charges, cost of sight tests, glasses and contact lenses, cost of travel to receive NHS treatment, NHS wigs and fabric supports
You can only apply online if you do not have capital or savings over £6,000 and
need to be: a pensioner, student, earning a wage, receiving state benefits, living in
a care home
  • Valid war pension exemption certificate and your prescription is for your accepted disability
  • Entitled to free NHS wigs and fabrics if related to your disability if you have certificate
  • War Pension Scheme or Armed Forces Compensation Scheme – you can claim money back for: dental treatment, NHS travel costs, sight test, glasses or contact lenses
  • Some prescribed items are always free including contraceptives and medication given to hospital inpatients

PPC (Prescription Prepayment Certificate)

A PPC could save you money if you pay for tour NHS prescriptions. The certificate
covers all your NHS prescriptions for a set price. You will save money if you need
more than 3 items in 3 months or 11 items in 12 months..
