How We Use The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS)

Common Questions About the Electronic Prescription Service

How do I nominate a Pharmacy through the EPS?

There are two primary ways that you can nominate a pharmacy; these are either through a mobile app that is approved by the NHS or alternatively through online portals offered by pharmacies. This way it is relatively simply to nominate a pharmacy and make getting your prescription easy

Can I use the EPS to get repeat prescriptions?

Yes, you can order and your GP can write your prescriptions for repeated dispensing

Is my GP using the Electronic Prescription Service?

The vast majority of general practitioners use the Electronic Prescription System; you can contact your GP to confirm if they are using the system and they can provide information to assist with its usage.

Is my information secure in the Electronic Prescription Service?

The NHS has developed the Electronic Prescription Service with security in mind, only healthcare workers who have obtained suitable authentication and authorisation can access it. This means that, for example, to update it a healthcare worker would need to be authenticated through the NHS Care Identity Service 2 which commits to secure authentication practices.

Can I change what pharmacy I want to have nominated?

Yes, you can change what pharmacy you have nominated provided you give your consent for the change to go through and tell either a pharmacist or your GP. It is recommended to do it before your next prescription is due so that you know who will be dispensing it.

Can I use the Electronic Prescription Service abroad?

You cannot use the service abroad however you can change it within England if you are travelling or on holiday provided you make your pharmacist/dispenser or GP aware prior to going.
