What is erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction is when you are either unable to get an erection or sustain an erection long enough for sex.

Erectile dysfunction may occasionally occur due to stress, alcohol consumption or tiredness and in these cases isn’t an issue if it happens only occasionally.

If erectile dysfunction is recurrent however it may be helpful to either consult your GP or a sexual health clinic. Recurring issues can be caused by:

  • High blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • diabetes
  • depression or anxiety
  • hormone problems

Effective lifestyle changes

Some lifestyle changes can provide a positive result and reduce issues with erectile dysfunction such as:

  • losing weight if overweight
  • exercising daily
  • eating a healthy and balanced diet
  • stopping smoking
  • trying to reduce stress and anxiety in your day to day life
  • not drinking more than 14 units of alcohol per week
  • taking a break from cycling if you cycle for more than 3 hours a week

Treatment

For erectile dysfunction it could be beneficial to make use of medicine that increases blood flow. For this purpose most commonly what is recommended are Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors such as:

  • sildenafil (Viagra)
  • tadalafil (Cialis)
  • vardenafil (Levitra)
  • avanafil (Spedra)

You can be prescribed sildenafil (Viagra) or alternatively buy it after consultation with a pharmacist. Consultation is advised to make sure it is the best option for you. Other PDE-5 inhibitors require a prescription.

Although not on the NHS, vacuum pumps may also be helpful to increase blood flow.

Discussion with your GP can also help if your erectile dysfunction is related to other medications you are taking and talks with a therapist can help if they are linked to your mental health.
