What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil (sebum), dead skin cells, and bacteria. It often appears as whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, or deeper cysts. Acne can affect people of all ages but is most common during adolescence and young adulthood.

Acne develops due to a combination of the following factors:

Treatments

Epiduo

Recommended for adolescents and adults with oily skin as a combination therapy. Requires assessment by a healthcare professional before use.

Combines adapalene (retinoid) and benzoyl peroxide to unclog pores, reduce bacteria, and prevent new breakouts.
Increases sun sensitivity—use sunscreen daily. May bleach fabrics.

Differin/Adapalene gel

Contains 0.1% adapalene, a retinoid that regulates cell turnover to prevent clogged pores and blackheads/whiteheads. Used for mild to moderate acne.
Use SPF 30+ daily. Avoid other harsh exfoliants. Not recommended during pregnancy. Requires prescription.

Erythromycin

A topical antibiotic for mild to moderate inflammatory acne that reduces acne-causing bacteria and inflammation.
Prolonged use may lead to bacterial resistance. Often combined with benzoyl peroxide. Requires prescription.

Co-Cyprindiol

A hormonal treatment for severe hormonal acne. Contains cyproterone acetate (anti-androgen) and ethinylestradiol (estrogen). Not a first-choice contraceptive.
Blocks androgen receptors, reduces sebum production, and shrinks sebaceous gland activity.
Requires prescription. Consult our pharmacist if no improvement after several months.

Treclin Gel

Combines clindamycin 1% (antibiotic) and tretinoin 0.025% (retinoid) to reduce bacteria, unclog pores, and prevent new spots.
Use sunscreen daily and avoid sunbeds. Don’t combine with other topicals at the same time. Avoid when pregnant or trying to conceive. Requires prescription.

Duac Gel

Contains clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide to reduce bacteria, clear pores, and decrease inflammation.
Use sunscreen daily. Avoid combining with retinoids at the same time. May bleach fabrics. Requires Prescription.

Acnecide

A benzoyl peroxide treatment for mild acne that kills bacteria, unclogs pores, and reduces inflammation. It does not require a prescription.
Bleaches fabrics. Use gentle moisturizer if irritation occurs. Use sunscreen during the day.
