Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that is passed on through sexual contact, including vaginal, anal, and oral sex.

Symptoms

Apply a wrapped ice pack to help soothe pain
Use petroleum jelly (such as Vaseline) or a pain-relief cream (like 5% lidocaine) to reduce discomfort when peeing
Always wash your hands before and after applying any creams or gels
Pour lukewarm water over the genital area while peeing to help ease stinging

Steps to take

First-time outbreak:

Antiviral medicine may be prescribed to prevent symptoms from worsening; it’s most effective if started within 5 days of symptoms appearing
Pain-relief creams may also be recommended

Recurrent outbreaks:

Log into your MP account and speak with a pharmacist for advice
Antiviral medicine can slightly shorten an outbreak if taken immediately
Most recurrent outbreaks settle on their own and tend to become less frequent over time
